In Tulsa, Oklahoma, spring storms are part of life, and so are the roof claims that follow. A hailstorm that bruises shingles or a windstorm that lifts flashing may not leave a drip on the ceiling right away. Water can soak attic insulation and roof decking for weeks, and mold can start before anyone sees a stain.
How storms turn into attic mold in Green Country
Green Country gets hit from several directions. The August 6, 2017 midtown EF2 tornado damaged homes around East 41st Street. The June 2023 windstorm brought winds near 100 mph and left more than 200,000 people without power. The May 2024 Claremore tornado did EF3-level damage. The December 2007 ice storm left more than 200,000 homes without power. And April through June brings about 36% of Tulsa's yearly rain, with May the wettest month at 5.73 inches (NOAA 1991–2020).
The common paths from storm to mold:
- Hail-bruised or cracked shingles that let water through slowly.
- Lifted flashing around vents, chimneys and skylights, where wind-driven rain gets in.
- Tarped or patched roofs left too long while a claim is sorted out.
- Power outages that shut off AC and dehumidifiers, so a damp house stays warm and wet.
- Ice dams and fallen limbs after ice storms.
A storm is not the only cause. Bath fans that vent into the attic instead of outdoors, and AC ducts or air handlers sweating in a hot attic, also wet the decking. See HVAC and AC mold if the attic has ductwork.
Signs of a roof leak with mold
- Brown rings or yellow stains on ceilings, especially near outside walls or below vents.
- A musty smell upstairs or in closets, worse after rain or on hot days.
- Dark staining or fuzzy growth on the underside of roof decking or rafters.
- Wet, matted or discolored attic insulation.
- Peeling paint or bubbling drywall tape on top-floor ceilings.
What to do first after a storm leak.
- Stop more water: a tarp or temporary repair to prevent further damage.
- Take photos and video of the roof, the attic and every stain before anything is removed, and keep damaged materials until your insurer says otherwise.
- Call your insurance agent and start the claim.
- Run the AC or a dehumidifier to dry the house.
- Don't scrub or tear out large moldy areas yourself, and keep kids and pets out of affected rooms.
- Get the roof fixed by a CIB-registered roofer and the mold assessed by a mold company. These are usually two different trades.
Does insurance cover mold from a roof leak?
Sometimes. Mold is usually covered only when it follows a covered, sudden loss, such as a storm that opens the roof. Mold from a slow leak that went on for months, or from worn-out roofing, is often excluded or limited. Many Oklahoma policies also have a separate wind and hail deductible. Read your declarations page and ask your agent.
Document everything, make reasonable repairs to prevent further damage, and keep every receipt. Nothing here promises coverage. Our post on whether homeowners insurance covers mold in Oklahoma goes deeper.
Oklahoma rules for storm repairs
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Roofing contractor registration (CIB) | Roofers must register with the Construction Industries Board, carry at least $500,000 in liability insurance for residential work, and show an "OK" registration number on trucks, ads and contracts |
| No deductible waivers (59 O.S. §1151.30) | A roofer may not offer to pay, waive or rebate your insurance deductible |
| 72-hour cancel after a denial (59 O.S. §1151.21) | A contract paid from insurance can generally be canceled within 72 hours after you receive a written denial of all or part of the claim |
| 3-day cooling-off for home sales | For sales made at your home, federal rules generally give you 3 business days to cancel |
| Permits | Roofing, structural, electrical and mechanical work generally needs a permit; mold cleaning and small tear-out usually don't. Ask the company or the City of Tulsa permit center |
Oklahoma does not license mold remediation companies, so the roofer's registration says nothing about the mold work, and a mold company's training says nothing about roofing. Get a written contract with no blank spaces from each, avoid large payments upfront, and report problems to the Oklahoma Attorney General. See hiring a mold remediation company in Oklahoma.
What attic mold work usually involves
After the roof is repaired, the companies we connect you with typically check moisture in the decking and framing, remove wet or moldy insulation, HEPA vacuum and clean or treat the decking and rafters, replace decking that is soft or badly stained, dry the space, and confirm it with readings before new insulation goes in. Some also fix bath fan ducts so they vent outside. More on the service at attic and roof-leak mold in Tulsa.
How much does attic mold remediation cost?
Published estimates, not quotes (Fixr 2025; This Old House Mar 2026). Tulsa quotes come from the companies, not from this site.
| Item | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Attic | $1,500–$9,000 | Fixr 2025 |
| Mold remediation, per sq ft | $10–$25 | This Old House 2026 (Fixr: $10–$30) |
| Typical remediation job | $1,200–$3,750 (avg ≈ $2,300) | This Old House 2026 |
Roof repair, new insulation and drywall are usually separate. The Tulsa mold remediation cost guide has the full table and a calculator.
When it is urgent
Call sooner if water is actively coming through a ceiling, a ceiling is sagging, the attic smells strongly after every rain, or anyone in the home has asthma or a weak immune system. EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold. If someone has symptoms, see a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Can a roof leak cause mold in the attic?
Yes. Water from hail-damaged shingles, lifted flashing or a patched roof can soak insulation and decking for weeks before a ceiling stain shows. Wet wood and insulation in a hot Tulsa attic are prime places for mold. Fix the roof first, then have the attic checked for moisture and growth.
Who do I call first after a storm leak, the roofer or the mold company?
Usually stop the water and call your insurance agent first, then get the roof repaired by a CIB-registered roofer. Have a mold company assess the attic and ceilings once the leak is stopped. Take photos before anything is removed. The two jobs are often separate contracts with separate scopes.
Can a Tulsa roofer pay my insurance deductible?
No. Under 59 O.S. §1151.30, a roofing contractor paid from insurance may not offer to pay, waive or rebate any part of your deductible. An offer like that is a red flag. Report it to the Construction Industries Board or the Oklahoma Attorney General. This is general information, not legal advice.
Does homeowners insurance cover mold after hail damage?
It may, when the mold follows a covered, sudden loss such as hail or wind opening the roof. Mold from long-term leaks or wear is often excluded or capped. Check your policy, document the damage, prevent further damage, and ask your agent. No one can promise coverage before the insurer decides.
